We’re often asked which Content Management System (CMS) is best for our clients. Well, Devious Media put together this infographic that summarizes the differences between WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal.

For the majority of our clients, we recommend WordPress for its ease of use of moderation and low setup and customization costs. And honestly, who doesn’t want a website that’s easy to maintain and costs substantially less to build?

Are you a web developer migrating domains, or a systems admin doing maintenance and need to flush the DNS cache on your machine to get things all in order? If you’re running Mac OS X, it’s actually pretty easy and only requires a simple command within your Terminal window. Depending on which version you’re running, just following the directions below:

Flushing DNS Cache in OS X Lion (10.7) and OS X Mountain Lion (10.8)

Launch Terminal and enter the following command. You’ll then be prompted to enter your administrative password, after which the command will automatically run.

sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder

Note the dscacheutil still exists in 10.7 and 10.8, but the official method to clear out DNS caches is through killing mDNSResponder. You can also find that process running in Activity Monitor.

Flush DNS Cache in Mac OS X 10.5, Mac OS X 10.6

Launch Terminal and issue the following command. You’ll then be prompted to enter your administrative password, after which the command will automatically run.

dscacheutil -flushcache

Flush your DNS Cache in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger

Type the following command in the Terminal. You’ll then be prompted to enter your administrative password, after which the command will automatically run.

lookupd -flushcache

All done! Your DNS cache should now be flushed!

We recently migrated a site from Joomla to WordPress and had to figure out how best to completely uninstall Joomla. Well, turns out the best way is to just delete all its files and then remove the database. Below are the folders and files you will need to remove (this is based off of Joomla 1.5.x):

Joomla! Folders

administrator – This folder contains all the files used for the administrator back-end.

cache – This folder is used by Joomla and some extensions to store cached files.

components – This folder contains all the installed components.

images – This folder is used by Joomla and store conten’s image files.

includes – This folder contains the Joomla framework files.

installation – This folder is needed for the initial Joomla installation and must be removed once the installation is complete.

language – This folder is used by Joomla and some extensions to store language translation files. Each language has a folder in languages containing all the different language files installed with extensions and templates. The file name of the each translation file is similar to the extension or template to which it belongs. If you look at an individual language file, they are text files that contain a list of constants used in the extension or template and the value that should be shown to the user.

libraries – This folder contains the Joomla API code along with other packages.

logs – This folder is used by Joomla and extensions to store log files.

media – This folder is used by Joomla and some extensions to store image files.

modules – This folder contains all the installed modules.

plugins – This folder contains all the installed plugins.

templates – This folder contains all the installed templates.

tmp – This folder is used by Joomla and extensions to store temporary files.

xmlrpc – This folder contains files that are used when making xmlrpc calls to Joomla. These calls are only allowed if Enable Web Services is set to Yes in the Globals -> System configuration (It is No by default).

Joomla! Files

CHANGELOG.php

configuration.php-dist – This is an example configuration.php file. This file will be created for you during the installation process, but this is good to keep around for reference.

COPYRIGHT.php

CREDITS.php

htaccess.txt – This is an example htaccess file. Apache will not use this file until it is renamed to “.htaccess”.

index2.php – This is a secondary entry point for all Joomla requests. If you replace index.php with index2.php in a request to a Joomla server, only the response from the requested component will be visible.

index.php – This is the main entry point for all Joomla requests.

INSTALL.php

LICENSE.php

LICENSES.php

robots.txt – This file is used by search engines. It tells search engines which folders not to index. In Joomla’s case, search engines should not index any folders.

Trying to run a Java application on your Mac and need to set your JAVA_HOME? Follow the instructions below to quickly and easily do it:

Open Terminal

Confirm you have JDK by typing “which java”. It should show something like /usr/bin/java.

Check you have the needed version of Java, by typing “java -version”.

JAVA_HOME is essentially the full path of the directory that contains a sub-directory named bin which in turn contains the java.

For Mac OSX – it is /Library/Java/Home

Set JAVA_HOME using this command in Terminal: export JAVA_HOME=/Library/Java/Home

echo $JAVA_HOME on Terminal to confirm the path

You should now be able to run your application

Note that this sets JAVA_HOME only for this session. If you want it to persist, you will have to add the command to your ~/.profile file. Below are instructions on how to accomplish this instead:

Open up Terminal.app (Applications >> Utilities >> Terminal)

Type: emacs .profile

add this to the end of the .profile file:

JAVA_HOME=/Library/Java/Home
export JAVA_HOME;

Save and exit emacs (ctrl-x, ctrl-s; ctrl-x, ctrl-c)

Open a new Terminal window (cmd-n) and type: $JAVA_HOME/bin/java -version

If you see something like:
java version “1.5.0_16″
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_16-b06-284)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_16-133, mixed mode, sharing)

Then you’ve successfully set your JAVA_HOME environment variable to the binary stored in /Library/Java/Home/bin/java

We recently had to reconfigure how mail was being sent using PHP and oddly there were many sources out there that just didn’t seem to work. So here’s some sample code we put together that should work if you’re trying to send authenticated SMTP email with an attachment using Pear Mail.

require_once "Mail.php"; // PEAR Mail package
require_once ('Mail/mime.php'); // PEAR Mail_Mime packge

$from = "Your Mom <mom@mom.com>";
$to = "Me <me@me.com>";
$subject = 'Call Me!';

$headers = array ('From' => $from,'To' => $to, 'Subject' => $subject);

// text and html versions of email.
$text = 'Hi son, what are you doing?\n\nHere's an picture of a cat for you.';
$html = 'Hi son, what are you doing?<br /><br />Here's an picture of a cat for you.';

// attachment
$file = '/catpictures/cat.jpg';
$crlf = "\n";

$mime = new Mail_mime($crlf);
$mime->setTXTBody($text);
$mime->setHTMLBody($html);
$mime->addAttachment($file, 'text/plain');

$body = $mime->get();
$headers = $mime->headers($headers);

$host = "smtp.yourserver.com";
$username = "me@me.com";
$password = "yourpassword";

$smtp = Mail::factory('smtp', array ('host' => $host, 'auth' => true,
'username' => $username,'password' => $password));

$mail = $smtp->send($to, $headers, $body);

if (PEAR::isError($mail)) {
	echo("<p>" . $mail->getMessage() . "</p>");
}
else {
	echo("<p>Message successfully sent!</p>");
}
